declamation piece RMCHS sy.06-07 “English Month”: The Youth-an agent of peace and love
The Youth-An Agent of Peace and Love
I started counting the days before Christmas.
There are not too many left, and i suppose everything will just whiz by, as it always
has, until that day of hope comes once more.
It always did, especially when i was a young kid.
Only they are not playing the songs that have made my memories of past
Chrismases much more joyful and, it seems, much placid. And peaceful.
Memberes of the board of judges, teachers, my fellow contestants, my fellow youth,
Good morning.
I make my way before you asking the same question which i presume, have been
asked by youths before me:
Does love and peace have any place in our world today?
Like many youths, I am a witness to hatred that is being sowed nowadays.
I worry over alarming reports that the Philippines is one of the unsafest places to
live in this world.
My heart goes out to that kid on the street, stretching his hands for alms that will
get him through the day.
My heart goes out to that little girl selling sampaguitas in the busy streets of
Quezon City, unmindful of the dangers of living life, quite literally, along its highways.
My heart goes out to that urchin, to whom the idea of love and care is alien, and to
whom the world is one big stage of pain, loneliness and suffering.
I am a witness to all of these.
To be in the middle of all these evils-it’s indeed terrifying.
But i am not one to give up easily. I hope that in my own little way, I can make a
difference in this world. I belive that I can be an agent of peace-and love.
Sowing seeds of love, where there were previously little or none at all,
seems a daunting task. But i belive i can do it.
However, I also belive that this is not the work one person alone.
My fellow youths, I need all the help in sowing these seeds.
Let us stop the vicious cycle of anger and hatred that has engulfed us and start
hoping for, and working towards the attainment of love and peace in our midst.
How do we do this? There are so many ways…
We can support the programs thast promote environmental awareness like the
continous greening programs of our city mayor and the DENR.
We can support the war on terrorism that has claimed so many innocent lives
for years now.
We can go out and assert ourselves on issues affecting us–child labor, escalating
drug use among the youth, the growing dangers of fraternities and vandalism right here
in our school.
Although we are not wealthy philantropists, we can support charitable
organizations of our choice. Let us make our less fortunate brothers and sisters safe and
happy.
The list goes on…
The heart of the matter is that, we can do so many things for so many of our brothers
in order to contribute in realizing our goal–a happier, safer and more positive world.
let us join in our hands in crashing the bad elements that bring our country enormous
problems. In joining our hands, unity can promise peace, love and progress.
I would like to share with you some of the most beautiful lines ever composed by a
gifted musician:
"…you may say I’m a dreamer,
but I’m not the only one;
I hope someday you’ll join us,
And the world will leave us one…"
and in closing, I have these borrowed lines to say:
"A bell is not a bell until you ring it-
A song is not a song until you sing it,
LOVE is not love until you give it away…"
